Senior Health Chat -- "The Weight of a Nation" Our topics over the last seven years have been quite diverse - stimulating us mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Senior Chat will again focus on a social issue - one that is affecting the health and economy of our nation. This is a good chance for you to invite friends to join us, because this issue virtually affects all ages. "The Weight of a Nation" is Michelle Obama's cause and we will see a new movie about that topic. I watched it in San Jose Tech Museum recently and was very enlightened about how obesity is affecting our health care system, our economy and our quality of life. This epidemic has become most critical in just the past two decades, and must be turned around. Our personal choices and our government's choices can make the difference. 10:00AM Los Altos United Methodist Church, Garden Room, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos, CA. Meets the first and third Friday of every month from 10:00AM - 11:30AM. No RSVP is necessary. All are welcome. Senior Health Chat -- "How Do You Know?" Senior Chat is for anyone who wants to be healthy in mind, body and spirit. We welcome people who wish to make new friends, stretch mind and body, and enjoy light refreshments. Randy Smith has a PhD in theoretical physics and will lead us in considering ways that we think and reason about the world we live in. We'll visit contributions from notables such as Popper, Hemple, Kuhn, and learn how by the 1960's the weight of simple, ordinary logic crushed the school of thought called "logical positivism". The problem is that many of us are logical positivists! So what now? Randy may help us to find ideas that sharpen our sense of mystery and wonder at the world around us. Randy Smith has led this discussion in other churches in the area - with overwhelming appreciation. 10:00AM Los Altos United Methodist Church, Garden Room, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos, CA. Senior Health Chat -- "Wholeness" Our Senior Health Chats often consider the connections of body, mind and spirit. How are these human parts encouraging each other? Do you or a loved one suffer with a disability? This very common, human condition will be discussed by Molly Hale, who has an amazing story of determination and healing to share. We will hear how she has dealt with the depression and pain. Molly has a new documentary available that you can watch: "Moment by Moment - the Healing Journey of Molly Hale" at http://abilityproduction.org/mbm_dvd.htm In preparation for this chat, let's ask ourselves "How do I see myself? Does that perspective improve or inhibit my health and well-being?" 10:00AM Los Altos United Methodist Church, Garden Room, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos, CA. Senior Health Chat -- "Ethical Wills" An ethical will is a way to share your values with your loved ones in the same way that a will of inheritance provides instructions for bequeathing your valuables. Ethical wills are not new. Today they are most often written as a separate document and shared with family members while the writer is still alive. In this presentation, we will: explore ways to write an ethical will; identify your personal stories and life lessons; complete the first draft of your personal ethical will; and find resources for your document. People who could consider writing an ethical will include: newlyweds for establishing a common base of values; expectant and new parents to provide a framework for child development; growing families for teaching values to our children; middle age and beyond for converting life experiences into wisdom and passing this on to future generations; and end of life to add the transcent dimension to our lives. Our presenter is Paul King, President of King Wealth Planning, Inc. and a certified financial planner. He has been a featured lecturer and instructor at Fortune 500 companies and Bay Area colleges. Paul regularly speaks on topics such as Modern Portfolio Principles, Strategies for Successful Retirement, and Asset Protection Techniques. 10:00AM Los Altos United Methodist Church, Garden Room, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos, CA. Senior Health Chat -- "Cities for All Ages" Santa Clara County is about to be hit by a “senior tsunami.” In less than 20 years, over 1/4 of our county’s adult population will be over 65, as the Baby Boom generation ages. Many will be non-drivers – living in cities that were mostly designed around the automobile. What can we do to adapt our cities to assure that our growing senior population – and others in our community – can live active, healthy, interesting, and productive lives, without having to drive or own a car? Learn more about this rapidly approaching “senior tsunami” and what our cities can do to prepare for it. Our presenter is Don Wenden. He was the Principal Planner for the Comprehensive Planning Section of the Santa Clara County Planning Office for 34 years prior to his retirement. 10:00AM Los Altos United Methodist Church, Garden Room, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos, CA. Senior Health Chat -- "Music Therapy" "Music Therapy" is important because it's a well known fact that well over 50% of people over the age of 85 have memory impairment, dementia or alzheimer's. Often that depends upon how they have cared for themselves, their attitudes toward life, and genetics. One gift that we can carry in our memories is the gift of music that came to us in our youth. If that music is heard, the brain is exercised and memory functions are encouraged. Then memory is enhanced, stress is reduced, and depression can be alleviated. Senior New Ways is embarking on a new focus as Executive Dir. John Lehman will share the "music as therapy" philosophy and some samples of music from our own youth. The music we will hear will be tailored to our age, be it 60, 70, 80, or 90. 10:00AM Los Altos United Methodist Church, Garden Room, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos, CA. Our speaker, Jeanne Smith, will share how an easy this process can be. Jeanne K. Smith is an Estate Organization Expert. Her specialty, which she pioneered in l992, focuses on end of life issues. Speaking personally, usually my writings have been about experiences I've had with my kids and grandkids - and they love to hear about themselves at a younger age. Memories can be lost and forgotten unless we take time now and then to record them - and it can become a hobby or a habit that we really enjoy! 10:00AM - 11:30AM Los Altos United Methodist Church, Garden Room, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos, CA.
