Friendly Visitor Training
The Friendly Visitor Program is a "system" in a community of faith to
help people feel more connected to God and each other.  The goal of
the program is to provide companionship to folks who are, for whatever
reason, alone and unable to leave their homes.

Friendly Visitors are lay persons of all ages who visit shut-in and older
adults over a long term.  This may vary from a few months to many
years.  They are folks who enjoy talking with people and are looking
for a way to serve their church and to better love God and their
neighbor as themselves.

Friendly Visiting is an informal sort of spiritual friendship in which
visitors listen and share some of their own lives.  It is a type of lay
person pastoral care, in which the visitee shares hopes and hurts.

A Friendly Visitor visits their assigned visitee once or twice a month, for
about an hour.  All times are flexible, depending on the activity and the
visitee's condition.

This program began in 1995 at Los Altos United Methodist Church
under the Ministry of Visitation.

Topics for training include:  initial orientation, Friendly Visitor skills and
considerations, rising above suffering, making a non-crisis visit, good
Bible passages for Friendly Visiting, prayer partner questions, Friendly
Visiting books, and supporting caregivers.
