"Great Idea" Number 1:
One way to get an older adult group meeting on a regular basis comes from Marilyn Wilson (Grass Valley, CA), a layperson in the United Methodist Church. She began by forming a Senior Task Force of a few interested older adults and the pastor. They worked on program ideas, include Meet and Share Our Stories, but it seemed their group was not quite ready to share on that personal a level. They decided to hold a special luncheon and program, inviting seniors 70 and older. The program included a 'Gathering Time' with introductions related to their personal exercise habits. They sang a blessing, followed by lunch and another song ("My Favorite Things"). Marilyn then presented "Tips for Aging Well" from Jane Thibault's work and book, A Deepening Love Affair (1993). At the tables, they shared which tip they would try in the following month. They closed with a thought for the month (Phillipians 4:8), evaluated the session, agreed to meet once a month for similar activities, and closed with a benediction togther.
Ed. note: If you have been wondering how to get something in older adult ministry going in your faith community, this is an excellent approach. All it takes is a few dedicated people to make it happen!
